Year in Review 2016

2016 has been a marvellous year for the Music program at Oakey State High School. The year got off to a cracking start in Term One with the Drum Corp meticulously preparing themselves to lead the Oakey ANZAC Day march in April. This is a huge honour which is bestowed upon our students each year, as they lead the parade made up of their fellow students, veterans, families, and military officers from the Oakey RAAF Base down the main street and to the Oakey ANZAC Memorial. Members of the Drum Corp and Choir also represented the school at the Oakey ANZAC Memorial Concert, held at the Cultural Centre.

2016 has also seen the return of a variety of ensembles within the school. These include the OSHS Choir, Concert Band, and String Ensemble. These ensembles have enjoyed excellent performances at a variety of events throughout the year, including the ANZAC Day service and Memorial Concert, and Awards Night to name a few. These ensembles have made impressive progress throughout the year and have received fabulous reviews from their debut performances. All three groups are continuing to expand into 2017, by increasing their performance opportunities and broadening their repertoire.

Classroom music has also been broadening its performance opportunities this year, in particular within the senior Music program. In term three, the year 11 and 12 Music students hosted an evening of Music from the movies in collaboration with Senior Visual Art students, and Hospitality students. The evening was entitled ‘Cinematic Express’, and showcased the work of our senior students whilst providing them with live performance experience.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported our Oakey musicians throughout 2016. As we continue to grow, our Music ensembles welcome any new members - the more the merrier!

We look forward to another enjoyable and fun year of music making in 2017.
