Jack Named Youth of the Year

On March 1, local high school students faced a panel of three adjudicators in the annual Oakey Lions Club’s Youth of the Year competition.

Oakey High captains Jack Lord and Tanicia Ireland, and Caitlin Buckley from Wilsonton State High were each interviewed on their interests and goals, and their local and general knowledge during the day.

That evening they dined with parents and friends, and members of Oakey Lions, before presenting two impromptu speeches of up to two minutes duration, and a five minute speech of their own choice.

The impromptu topics took the form of two questions.

Is your glass half full or half empty?

Is mankind responsible for climate change?

Each speaker approached the impromptu topics from slightly different angles as they presented their respective thoughts and opinions to their appreciative audience.

Jack Lord was the overall winner of the Oakey competition, and Tanicia was awarded the public speaking prize.
